Principles and Precautions for Valve Pressure Testing

(1) Generally, valves are not subjected to strength tests unless they have been repaired. However, valve bodies and bonnets—or those that have suffered corrosion damage—must undergo strength testing after repair. For safety valves, the set pressure, reseat pressure, and other relevant tests must comply with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable regulations. (2) After valve installation, both strength and tightness tests should be conducted. For low-pressure valves, a random 20% inspection is sufficient; if any fail, 100% inspection is required. In contrast, medium- and high-pressure valves must undergo 100% inspection without exception. (3) During testing, valves should be installed in positions that allow easy access for inspection. (4) For valves with welded connections, if blind flange testing is not feasible, alternative sealing methods such as tapered seals or O-ring seals may be used instead.

Comparing the Differences Between Elastic Soft and Hard-Sealed Gate Valves

Hard sealing involves a metal-to-metal seal, where both the sealing sphere and the valve seat are made of metal. This type of sealing requires high machining precision and sophisticated manufacturing processes, making it typically suitable for high-pressure applications—usually above 35 MPa. In contrast, soft sealing uses a metal-to-nonmetal interface, such as nylon or PTFE, and follows the same manufacturing standards as hard sealing. First, regarding the sealing materials: Elastic soft-sealed gate valves and hard-sealed gate valves differ primarily in the material used for the valve seat. Hard sealing relies on precisely machined valve seat materials to ensure tight tolerances when paired with the valve’s core (the sphere), commonly made from stainless steel or copper. On the other hand, soft sealing refers to nonmetallic materials embedded within the valve seat, which provide flexibility while maintaining effective sealing performance.
